No Error Code? Common Issues & Fixes

These are the most common e-bike problems with no display code — and what to check first.

Battery Won't Charge / No Power

You might notice:

  • •Display stays dark when powered on
  • •Charger light stays red or won't turn green
  • •Bike cuts out mid-ride

Try this first:

  1. 1Check the charger is fully seated — a loose connection is the #1 cause.
  2. 2Try a different outlet. Surge protectors can block charging current.
  3. 3Inspect the charge port for dirt, corrosion, or bent pins.
  4. 4If battery is below 10%, leave on charger 30+ min before powering on.
  5. 5If still no response, the BMS may have tripped — a professional reset is needed.

Battery not holding charge after a full cycle? That's cell degradation — book a diagnostic.

Motor Not Engaging / No Assist

You might notice:

  • •Pedaling feels like a regular bike
  • •Motor hums but doesn't push
  • •Assist cuts in and out randomly

Try this first:

  1. 1Confirm assist level is set above 0 — easy to accidentally knock to off.
  2. 2Check the speed sensor magnet is aligned with the sensor body.
  3. 3Inspect the motor cable connection at the frame junction.
  4. 4Restart: power off, wait 10 seconds, power back on.
  5. 5If motor hums but won't engage, the torque/cadence sensor may need calibration.

Assist cutting out above 15–20 mph? That's normal — it's the Class 1/2 speed limit.

Display Not Communicating

You might notice:

  • •Display shows dashes or blank screen
  • •App won't connect via Bluetooth
  • •Settings won't save

Try this first:

  1. 1Re-seat the display cable at the handlebar mount — corrosion is common in Florida humidity.
  2. 2For Bluetooth: delete the bike from paired devices and re-pair from scratch.
  3. 3Check that display firmware is up to date via the manufacturer's app.
  4. 4Inspect the wiring harness for any pinched or chafed sections.
  5. 5Factory reset: hold power + mode for 5 sec on most brands.

Florida salt air corrodes connectors fast — annual connector cleaning is the best prevention.

Overheating / Thermal Cutoff

You might notice:

  • •Motor suddenly stops on a long ride
  • •Battery warning light in heat
  • •Reduced power in direct sun

Try this first:

  1. 1Stop and let the motor or battery cool in shade for 15–20 minutes.
  2. 2Never charge immediately after a hot ride — let the battery cool first.
  3. 3Avoid leaving your e-bike in a closed car or direct sun in Florida summer.
  4. 4Reduce assist level on long flat stretches to lower motor heat buildup.
  5. 5Repeated thermal cutoffs on short rides = blocked vents or failing cells.

Repeated thermal shutdowns shorten battery life significantly — don't ignore the pattern.

Brakes Feel Weak or Spongy

You might notice:

  • •Lever pulls to the handlebar
  • •Longer stopping distance than usual
  • •Squealing or grinding on braking

Try this first:

  1. 1Hydraulic brakes: check fluid level at the reservoir — low fluid = bleed needed.
  2. 2Cable brakes: turn barrel adjuster counter-clockwise to increase tension.
  3. 3Inspect pads — less than 1 mm of material means replace immediately.
  4. 4Clean rotors and pads with isopropyl alcohol to remove oil contamination.
  5. 5Bed in new pads with 10–15 moderate stops from 15 mph before hard braking.

E-bikes are heavier than regular bikes — brake maintenance is more critical, not less.

Range Drops Suddenly

You might notice:

  • •Battery drains 2× faster than normal
  • •Range estimate wildly inaccurate
  • •Bike loses power on hills it handled before

Try this first:

  1. 1Check tire pressure — under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance significantly.
  2. 2Inspect the chain — a worn or dry chain robs 5–10% of range.
  3. 3Reduce assist level — Turbo/Boost mode can cut range by 40–50%.
  4. 4Check battery age — most e-bike batteries lose 20% capacity after 500 charge cycles.
  5. 5If range dropped suddenly (not gradually), a cell group may have failed.

Sudden range loss on a battery under 2 years old is often a warranty issue — keep your purchase receipt.

Still Stuck?

If the issue isn't resolved after these steps, don't force it — you could cause more damage. Our mobile e-bike mechanic carries a diagnostic scan tool and comes directly to you in Stuart, West Palm Beach, and across the Treasure Coast.

E-Bike Flat Tire Service

Flat Tire on an E-Bike? It's Not Like a Regular Bike.

Hub-motor and moped-style e-bikes have heavy axle nuts, motor cables, and waterproof connectors that make a flat tire repair a completely different job. Here's how we do it safely.

Step 1

Power Isolation & Battery Removal

Turn off the e-bike display and completely remove the battery pack before touching any components. This prevents accidental motor engagement during the repair.

Step 2

Motor Cable Disconnection

Unlike traditional bikes, rear-hub e-bikes require tracking the heavy-duty motor cable down from the axle, unclipping zip ties, and carefully pulling apart the waterproof inline plug. Forcing this connector damages the pins.

Step 3

Axle Nut Removal

Moped-style and hub-motor bikes use heavy axle nuts — often 18mm or 19mm — rather than quick-release levers. Loosen them carefully while keeping track of torque washers and alignment tabs. These must go back in the correct order.

Step 4

Tire & Tube Service

Pull the wheel free from the dropouts, deflate the tube completely, use tire levers to pop the heavy-duty tire bead over the rim wall, and inspect the inner casing for glass or thorns before sliding in a fresh tube or patch.

Step 5

Reassembly & Verification

Re-secure the axle nuts to proper torque specs, plug the motor connector back together by aligning the internal arrow markers, and spin the wheel freely to verify clear brake rotation before reinstalling the battery.
